A marketing plan is a written document which contains the market research and analysis of your situation, your aims, strategies and actions to help you achieve those goals plus the subsequent monitoring and analysis afterwards. It also should include the budget and who is going to be responsible for the diverse tasks.
Step 1. Market research and my company/project analysis.
Within our your project, you should analyze the following things:
-Web/blog: it is user-friendly, -> web design, web analytics.
-Social media: Which platforms do I have a profile?
-SEO/SEM: Am I doing anything with those?
-email marketing.
Within the digital environment you should ask yourself the following:
-Digital trends: influencers, social media, content marketing, etc.
-Competitors: What are they doing?
-Best digital practices: within your area of expertise and in general.
Step 2. Objectives
What do I want to achieve? What are my goals? Do I want to grow my facebook fanbase? Sell more? Do I want more newsletter subscribers? Your goals should be SMART (specific, measurable, attainable, realistic and timely).
Step 3. Strategies and tactics.
Your strategies are your master plan. Those are the way to achieve your goals. You don’t need to be too specific, that’s for the next step. The more usual strategies in digital marketing are:
-Visibility and traffic: SEO & SEM, social media, content marketing, etc.
-Achieving more customers: through your gained traffic.
-Customer loyalty: email marketing, coupons, membership, etc.
Step 4. Action Plan.
What are the specific steps are you going to take to achieve your goals? What is going to be the budget and who is going to be the one responsible? Here it is an example; 300€ budget for your 5 day Christmas campaign in Facebook.
Step 5. Monitoring and analysis.
As important as setting up your objectives is establishing how you are going to check that everything is working. How are you going to measure your gains? Checking regularly how your project is doing, can enable you to change something that it is not working or moving your budget where an action is performing really well.
When you work alone, it is easy to be carried along by daily tasks and not writing a digital marketing plan. Hey, I am guilty of that. BUT I do notice a big difference when I make time to write and think what are the things I want to achieve and how I am going to do that. Just steps 2, 3 and 4. You do not have to write an extensive analysis of your digital environment or do a big investigation, but if you just take some time to think and write what are your next goals and steps, you are on the right track to getting there.
So take a pen and paper and get started.
